Welcome to the New River Valley
in beautiful southwestern Virginia
Home to more than 165,000 residents, the New River Valley (NRV) is comprised of the counties of Montgomery (including the towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg), Floyd, Giles, Pulaski and the city of Radford. Despite its name, geologists believe the New River is the oldest river in North America and the second oldest river in the world!
There are several locations in the NRV where outdoor enthusiasts can access the New River and enjoy fishing, boating, tubing, and kayaking. Claytor Lake in Pulaski County is another great location for outdoor fun and camping. Besides water fun, the NRV offers all types of outdoor recreation for hikers, hunters, and sightseers as well! Quaint local businesses, wineries and eateries welcome residents and visitors all year long!
Blacksburg is home to the Virginia Tech Hokies, while nearby Radford is home to the Radford University Highlanders. Christiansburg is located just off interstate 81, just minutes to the VT campus. While Blacksburg offers locally owned businesses and a cozy, small-town feel, big-box retailers like Best Buy, Wal-Mart and Target, and chain restaurants like Outback, Red Lobster and Olive Garden are easily accessible just minutes away in Christiansburg.
With the combination of outdoor recreation, cultural experiences at local universities, availability of shopping and dining and welcoming residents, the NRV is a wonderful place to call home! Welcome!
